Traffic and Time - 06.23.03
I recently heard, on a radio commercial for a church, a reverend type say, without laughing, that you should learn to cherish, not dread, the time spent in traffic on your daily commute to and from work.
So, now I am presented with yet another reason to stay away from religion.
I understand trying to put a positive spin on things, but lets be realistic. Driving in rush hour traffic is just a means to an end and it sucks immensely. Next, they’ll tell us how good it is to be in a head on collision. It will definitely bring you closer to God. If you are cruising around for an hour in your new e-class on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, with no particular place to go, that’s awesome. But, if you need to get to work on time and you are stuck in that same car for an hour with a million other losers that are all driving like idiots, vying for that same little chunk in the space/time continuum, trying desperately to be the first one to get to their pathetic little jobs, it’s a living hell that is unrivaled by the 7 layers of Dante’s Inferno. Nothing drains the soul more powerfully and completely than bumper-to- bumper traffic (Standing in a long line comes in a close second).
We won’t even go into how or why the left lane of a freeway ever comes to a complete stop. It’s a phenomenon, an affront to all that is sane and right in the world.
Think about this.
Most people waste about 2 hours per workday in traffic.
That’s one hour in the am and one in the pm.
This is 10 hours per workweek.
We're awake about 17 or 18 hours per day.
Every 2 weeks of commuting to work we waste about 1 whole day of our life (awake time).
So every year we waste 26 days of life. That’s nearly a full month, Damn it.
Every 12-13 years of commuting to work, we waste an entire year of our life.
So, if I work until I'm 50 and die like my dad did,
I would loose 16 months of my 216 months left on this planet.
That is 7.5% of the rest of my life wasted in traffic.
I'm so depressed… I think I’ll go for a drive.
